interior design/Danish Ministry of Culture

photo Simon Ladefoged

What if your office looked like this? These photos show the interior design of the Danish Ministry of Culture (Kulturministeriet), in Copenhagen. The offices have been redesigned in 2005 by Louise Campbell and Marianne Britt Jørgensen. If you click on their names you’ll be redirected to their websites (I particularly like Louise Campbell’s Journal section).

All the photos in this post are by Simon Ladefoged.

Ind=in, Ud=out

The color combination is just so perfect.

The funny thing is that I found out about this amazing work space during a career fair at my University last week. I applied for a mentorship program, among others, also at the Ministry of Culture.

When I talked to them, they also gave me a brochure about the design of their office….right there I thought it was odd…but then they told me more about it, and showed me these beautiful photos. If you read Danish you can download the Ministry brochure here (Design og Kunst i hverdagen).

So I now hope even more to get my mentor from there! Cross your fingers.

tea time

product & photo: Donkey Products

German design company Donkey Products sells these funny tea-bags, check their website for more crazy options (from famous rockstars tea-bags to the Swedish Royal Family tea-bags). It look easy to make too. What you need is a teabag, some light weight cardboard, scissors and a stapler…

And what about serving these wallpaper inspired cookies with your tea? They are made by San Francisco pastry shop Miette. Needless to say I’m going to check it out at the Ferry Building, as soon as I can! They have an online shop too. And they make macarons, hurray!!

Printables for free

art by Amy Moss/photo from Eat Drink Chic

I need to print some business cards (or I’d rather say student cards?) for my fieldwork in SF. I found some very nice templates, and not just for business cards…there are so many free PDFs for gift tags, cards, stationery sets, soda bottles, cake boxes, anything really. The one above is by Amy Moss, her lovely blog Eat Drink Chic has so many great downloads!

I also like Creature Comforts, another blog packed with nice free printables, and I do it yourself.

dk culture not what you expect

my feet at the new DR Byen

A month ago it was the Culture Night here in CPH, and we decided to explore some of the places that had special events going on. I expected the typical Culture Night kind of routine…some museums, some galleries, stuff like that…it ended up quite differently.

First, this:

On our way to the pizza place we noticed that the public hospital was also celebrating the culture night, so we HAD to go. Above, Andreas is sewing somebody’s (fake) arm, under the supervision of a nurse. He says is a good skill to have in the States.

The hospital was great, they had all sort of activities going on, for those not faint of heart.

I found it interesting that the city national hospital was part of the cultural events as well…and it was a nice chance to visit the place where the famous Lars von Trier series Riget was set! (see Bodil’s comment for more info on the hospital!)

A thing that impressed me is how nice the hospital is, they even have a lounge area for the teenage guests, with a cafeteria, design furniture and computer room. Here it is:

Definitely doesn’t look like any of the Italian or American public hospitals (are there US public hospitals? I’m kind of ignorant about it). Oh well….

Next stop was the Folketinget: the Danish Parliament. Lots of wood, and very humble, also quite small…

Law’s purpose is the people’s life

Before leaving we got to visit different rooms where the main political parties were having…parties. I must say the Danish folkeparti was unforgettable with its mixture of bad taste, loud music and dubious “typical” Danish shows like the (Scottish) bag-pipe players…

And then we realized we had an hour left, to complete our culture night grand tour (“night” events tend to end pretty early here, usually don’t last all night long, but at midnight).

We decided to take the metro to the new ultramodern,  ultra celebrated DR Byen, or the public DK tv and radio building. It was FANCY!

And at the end of our pilgrimage through various DK public institutions we got to rest in the new ultra expensive concert hall at DR Byen. A guy was talking about the acoustic and the materials used to build it and most people were napping…so nice…it feels like being in a cocoon, or at the center of the earth…

And the last amazing touch of style were the chairs, all in different shades of red and orange to give an impression of non-static pattern. I love that!

before & after

from Design Sponge

Back to Denmark, where it’s actually cold at night, yes!!

Sun is shining, blonds are biking around happy and well dressed, our moth infestation in the kitchen is thriving more than ever – but we got anti-bug weapons now, and I’m emptying closets & boxes & various receptacles of stuff I do not want any longer. Feeling minimalist, planning one more trip to Ikea & getting lots of inspiration from DesignSponge, especially the before & after section.

I always feel like re-constructing/emptying/remodeling in periods of change, or after the holidays. Now it’s actually both. In less than 3 weeks I’m starting grad school – the only stressing thing is the fieldwork, that it’s supposed to be in the spring semester, with very little planning time, but I’m sure I’ll manage that too…

For now is just too nice to enjoy the nice evenings & walk around just as a tourist, finding all sorts of little small streets and thrift stores and eating ice cream. (yes, Copenhagen is way too relaxing sometimes!!)

soy candle

photo Curious Yellow @ Etsy

I just found out about the existence of such thing as soy candles, thank to my hopeless addiction to Etsy. They sell tons of different types, like the ultra cute one above, with the recycled container. The nice thing about them is that they’re not based on paraffin, which it’s made out of petroleum waste and it’s pretty unhealthy, particularly if you use candles a lot (like here in Scandinavia). Soy wax is natural and burns smoothly.

I’d love to make some, maybe in cups like this.
