The Round Tower in Copenhagen, besides being a historical landmark, an astronomical observatory and a wonderful place to see the city from above, is also a place where you can always see very good exhibitions. I took these photos at the Tingatinga art show…celebrating this peculiar art style that originated in Tanzania, with self-taught painter Edward Saidi Tingatinga (1932-1972).
Tingatinga started painting with bicycle enamel on board and canvas…and so did many other painters in the same “school”. Making copies of the same painting wasn’t, and is not, considered bad in Tingatinga art. It’s just a smart way to save time, as you don’t have to come up with a new design!
This is a detail of the painting called “Women working, men drinking” by Charinda (2010)
The exhibition is now over, but if you are interested in Tingatinga art you can buy the show catalog, published by Thorup Art (in English).
