Last night we came back from a weekend in Finland: we went to Helsinki and to Porvoo (see image above), a little town on the southern coast. It has been a magical weekend, and wasn’t too cold – except for yesterday with -7 degrees. We like Finland more and more…this is the second time we have visited it.
The excuse was to see a big retrospective show of Finnish photographer Pentti Sammallahti, one of our favourites. We enjoyed using the Phaidon Wallpaper City Guide to the city. It’s the first time I use one of the Wallpaper guides, and it turned out to be a very good idea. I really like the big photos and the design/architecture advice they give: most tourist guides are essentially text-based, and not visual at all (and heavy to carry!). Following the Helsinki City Guide’s suggestions we found a small bar furnished with vintage Eames chairs and featuring an old cigarette vending machine that now sells…homemade comics, in homemade ‘cigarette boxes’! I’m going to post about that soon, too, together with photos and links. I got a lot of inspiration in these 3 days.
In the meantime check out Ruth Landesa’s beautiful blog about Finland, recipes, illustration, photos and more – in English. The illustration above comes from there!
