A friend emailed me today and gave me the link to an article in the main Italian newspaper, Corriere della Sera. It is the (quite surreal) story of a factory near Milan: the company employs 30 people, and the managers decided to sack 10-13 of them but… only women. Why women? The official motivation is that women can then stay home and take care of their families, and secondly, that their income is just supplementary in the family economy.

It really blows my mind that this kind of declaration can be released in 2011, in Italy. My country is regressing at an impressive pace. What was even crazier were some of the comments left by Italian men and women who actually agreed on the fact that women should stay home and take care of the family. Did you know that 50% Italian women don’t even have a job?
